Description

GIOVAN FRANCESCO de ROSA, known as PACECCO
(Naples, 1607-1656)

Sant'Agata
Oil on canvas, 78 x 64 cm
The present canvas depicts the saint on a sky background. It is usually represented with the attributes characterizing her: pincers and breasts, elements linked to her martyrdom. In this representation the artist painted the suffering emerging from the facial expressions of the woman.
The canvas is here attributed to Giovan Francesco de Rosa, a Neapolitan painter better known as Pacecco. According to his biographer Bernardo De Dominici, the artist was a pupil of Massimo Stanzione, and he became one out of his most original students.
