Description

SIMON VOUET (attrib.)
(Paris, 1590-1649)

Salomè with the head of Baptist
Third decade of the seventeenth century
Oil on canvas, 87.5 x 73.1 cm
The figure of Salome, Herodias’ beautiful daughter, is represented here in the classical iconography: the young girl, in fact, shows the head of John the Baptist, a gift given to her by Herod after enchanted him with a sensual dance.
The canvas, here attributed to Simon Vouet, was probably painted in the third decade of the seventeenth century when the painter, following a trip to Venice, approached the classical simplicity of Guido Reni. Her heroines are idealized, sensuals and tempered by classical baroque and French elements, brought to Italy after a stay in France in 1627.
