Description

PIETRO MONTANINI
(Perugia, 1626 – 1689)

Crossing of a gorge
Oil on canvas, 65 x 80 cm
The painter was influenced by Salvator Rosa in the composition of landscapes and small figurines although his works are more prone to a clearer palette and to a focus for the real, oriented to a formal fusion of baroque and classicism .
Montanini has been unjustly relegated by critics due to his limited talent only in this kind of productions.
This landscape, from the strong effects of light, showing its ability to assimilate and synthesize the various expressive components of the Baroque in a busy and vibrant paintings.
The painting depicts the figurines intends to cross a gorge, in a strongly romantic landscape, dominated in the distance by an impenetrable and mysterious village.
