Description

PAOLO DE MATTEIS
(Piano Vetrale, 1662 – Napoli, 1728)

Urania
Oil on canvas, 118 x 109.5 cm
The painting shows Urania, figure of the Greek mythology, daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne.
Dressed in blue, crowned with stars, the muse of astronomy holds a globe close to her and a compass, symbol and emblem of the geometry.
The painting is attributed to Paolo de Matteis, Luca Giordano’s pupil, of which he appreciated especially the color revolution.
At the end of the seventeenth century, his pictorial language underwent a gradual swerve adhering to a classicism Marattesque, thanks to the presence in Naples of Luigi Garzi.
