FRANCESCO MONTI known as IL BRESCIANINO DELLE BATTAGLIE (school of)
(Brescia 1646 – Parma 1712)

Couple of Battles
Oil on canvas, 56 x 88.5 cm
The pair of paintings was painted by an artist active in Francesco Monti’s workshop. The painter, called Brescianino lived in different Italian cities (Genoa, Rome, Venice and Naples) he opened his own school in Parma. He had numerous students including his son, Joseph. He worked for the court of Parma and in 1681 he was of Farnese’s service.

The battles, presented here, show the same artistic composition: fortified cities in the background, mountains in the distance, shrubs and trees surrounding the main scene.
The horses, already present in other works, are a useful point of comparison.
The canvases are characterized by the representation of small figures according to Tempesta’s landscapes and Salvator Rosa’s ones. They show some solutions detectable in several other paintings of the same subject, such as the composition with greater densification of figures on one of the sides of the visual field and the patterns of the poses.
