Italian ivory and tortoiseshell plaque depicting Diana bathing with her nymphs - 18th Century

elephant ivory oval plaque (Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797 or Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758) painted on the front with the representation of “Diana Bathing with her Nymphs". The back side, slightly domed is decorated with piqué clouté and piqué posé tortoiseshell floral and foliate scrolls and with Mediterranean coral cabochons.
Piqué work was introduced by Neapolitan jeweler Laurentini in the middle of the 17th Century, popular in France where it was known as piqué d'or and then was brought into England with the late 17th Century immigration of the skilled Huguenot craftsmen.
Height x width 10.5 x 8.2 cm. Weight 33.2 gr. Item condition grading: **** good (minor losses).
Accompanied by Ce.S.Ar. Centro Studi Archeometrici certificate of authenticity (pre-1947).
