Beschreibung

Large dish depicting St. Nicholas Rescuing Children from Brine
DERUTA, Master of St. Nicholas; mid-17th century.Majolica painted throughout in polychrome. St. Nicholas and the children are portrayed in a landscape with city views and, on the right, a large arch on pillars; on the left, an angel points to the sainted bishop's prodigious feat; a floral decoration completes the scene.
Ø 44 cm.; h. 5 cm.
Condition: excellent. This intriguing dish of the highest quality and complexity of figuration presents a painting telling the story of a miracle performed by St. Nicholas, which involved raising from the dead three boys who had been slain and put in brine by an evil publican. The sky painted blue with broad brush strokes, the pillars, the delicate palette and the tendency to take up the whole of the available space to depict an event, are all features typical of certain majolica works produced in Deruta in the 17th century by a number of different masters, possibly all working in a single workshop which has yet to be identified.
