Beschreibung

A SMALL INSCRIBED BRONZE OVAL OIL LAMP, DENG
China, Han dynasty

Oval in shape, rounded wings on the two longest sides, in the middle of the upper side the mechanism that allows the opening of half of the dome decorated with four compartments inside each of which is a stylized dragon within bands of paired triangles, the base with an incised inscription.

5 x 7,5 x 8,6 cm

Provenance : Fabrizio Savi collection, acquired in the early 2000s.
The shape of this lamp, essential in its lines but very elegant, is a direct derivation of analogous and precious cups in lacquered wood, much more expensive than the same bronze artifacts.
A lamp very similar to this - also with inscription - is in the collections of the Beijing Palace Museum (The Complete Treasure of the Palace Museum. Bronze Articles for Daily Use, Hong Kong 2006, n. 90); another is illustrated in C.F. Kelley - C. Mengjia, Chinese Bronzes from the Buckingham Collection, Chicago 1946, p. 199, tav. LXIX); see also the lamp in the Musée national des Arts asiatiques-Guimet in Paris (C. Delacour, De bronze, d'or et d'argent. Arts somptuaries de la Chine, Paris 2001, pp. 94-96).
