Logge di Raffaello nel Vaticano

A collection of engravings illustrating the Vatican Loggias frescoed by Raphael, of particular rarity and value. Made by Giovanni Volpato (1735-1805) from 1772 to 1776, divided into three parts, for a total of 56 plates, of which this collection contains parts I and II (in two separate volumes), for a total of 33 plates. The first is the frontispiece depicting the view of the Loggie, with the inscriptions: Petrus Camporesi delin./ Cum privilegio SS. D. N. Clementis PP. XIV/ Joannes Volpato Sculp./ Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano. Following are the plates engraved by Givanni Ottaviani (1735-1808) after designs by Pietro Camporese (1763-1822) and Gaetano Savorelli (died 1791), representing two doors (plates A and B) and the ornaments (plates I-XIV) . The second volume contains the plates of the walles (pl. I-XIII). Inscriptions: Cai. Savorelli Pict. et Pet. Camporesi Arch. delin. / Joann. Ottaviani sculp. cum privilegio SS. D. N. Clementis XIII.

Giovanni Volpato is known for his engravings of the famous monuments of the sixteenth century, in particular his work and the translations of the frescoes of Palazzo Farnese in Rome (Gilet 2007). These engravings are important for understanding the contemporary perception of the work of the greatest artists such as Raphael and Annibale Carracci.
