Beschreibung

Carlo Goldoni is an amusing black and white etching realized by Raffaello Morghen, also known as Raffaele Morghen (Portici, Naples, 1758 - Florence, 1833).

As the inscriptions on plate report along the margins of the oval frame, "Antonio Fedi disegnò / Raffaello Morghen inc.", this is an after Antonio Fedi (Florence, 1771-1838). The title is engraved on plate on the lower center.

This is an original print representing a classical portrait of the famous Venetian playwright (Venice, 1707 - 1793) with incredible draftsmanship and a very delicate touch.

In excellent conditions, with a usual light yellowing of the paper. A white cardboard passepartout is included (52.5 x 37 cm).

Raffaello Morghen (Portici, Naples, 1758 - Florence, 1833), also known as Raffaele Morghen, was son of art of Filippo Morghen, a Florentine engraver, who moved to Naples after the invitation of King Charles of Bourbon (the future Charles III). In 1779, Raffaello Morghen studied with Giovanni Volpato in his Roman School. His patron was the Venetian ambassador Girolamo Zulian, an art enthusiast, who also hosted Antonio Canova at the Palazzo Venezia.

In 1794, Morghen moved to Florence to teach the technique of wood engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts, where sculptors like Lorenzo Bartolini and Giovanni Duprè were also trained.

He also reproduced frescoes by Raphael in the Vatican and the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci.

After his death, he was buried in the Church of San Martino in Montughi. In the left aisle of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence, there is the monument made for Morghen by Odoardo Fantacchiotti in 1854, at the expense of the engraver's students.
