Description

AN INLAID CÉLADON GLAZED CERAMIC HANDLED EWER
Korea, Goryeo dynasty style, 13th century

Double gourdshape with ovoid body and bulbous neck, curved spout and ear shaped interwined handle, the lid with a stylized bird finial, the whole external surface covered with a céladon glaze with a black and white inlaid decoration of flying cranes inside circular medallion amidst stylized clouds.

28 cm high

Provenance: Italian private collection.

This ewer exemplifies a typology of Korean pottery from the Goryeo period. The double gourd shape, borrowed from China, welcomes a brilliant olive green céladon glaze, also inspired by Chinese ceramic production. The use of the inlay technique for the rendering of the decoration is instead a specialty in which the Korean potters excelled, used profusely especially in the thirteenth century.
