Description

THREE PRINTED MAPS
Korea, Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), 19th century

The three maps arranged on a single support (142 x 47.4 cm), each with its own silk frame.

34,5 x 28 cm each

Provenance: Italian private collection, formerly owned by an Italian diplomat who lived in Korea in the second half of the 20th century.

The three woodcut prints were most likely originally part of an atlas with a greater number of geographical maps. The one in the center - entitled 東國八道大総圖 - depicts the entire Korean peninsula, indicating the eight provinces into which it was administratively divided during the Joseon period. The one on the right identifies the province of Hwanghae (黄海道), the one on the left the province of Chungcheong (忠清道).
