The screen is made of eight autonomous compositions painted in ink and colours on silk, each of which with a decoration with flowering branches and birds of different species, each panel enriched by a poem written in Chinese characters in beautiful calligraphy, all the compositions signed 松岩 ( Song-am), each of the six central panels on the back with a long calligraphy signed by the same author.

185 x 360 cm

Provenance: Italian private collection, formerly owned by an Italian diplomat who lived in Korea in the second half of the 20th century.

The genre of 'flowers and birds' spread in Korea especially in the final part of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1897) and in the first decades of the 20th century. Despite the evident affinities with Chinese painting, the style of these compositions is distinguished by its originality which is a mirror of Korean figurative culture.
Screens with 'flowers and birds' (hwajodo byeongpung) were mainly used in the residential neighborhoods inhabited by women.
