Description

ERCOLE GENNARI
(Cento, 1597 – Bologna, 1658)

St. Paul the Apostle
Oil on canvas, 70 x 55.5 cm
The work in question is attributed to Ercole Gennari. Married to one of Guercino's sisters, Lucia, he decided to abandon his studies in medicine and surgery to study art in Barbieri’s atelier.
The painting depicts St. Paul with the iconographic attribute of the sword, the instrument of his martyrdom. On a dark background, the main character is hit by a beam of light illuminating the strong features of the face.

The work is accompanied by the expertise of Emilio Negro.
