Saint Mary Magdalene Penitent
Oil on canvas, 80 x 70 cm
The painting is attributed to Mario Balassi, a Florentine artist of the first baroque generation. Student of Jacopo Ligozzi, Matteo Rosselli and Passignano, became a reference artist of the family de Medici.

Mary Magdalene is depicted with long hair covering the nudity and the jar of ointment, her iconographic element.
The work has been attributed to a drawing appeared in 2011 (Dorotheum), showing the signature and the date (1670). In the painting, as well as in the preparatory drawing, Mario Balassi’s stylistic characteristics appears clearly.
