CIRO FERRI
(Rome, 1634-1689)

Martyrdom of St. Lawrence
Oil on canvas, 68.3 x 43.5 cm
The work in question is attributed to Ciro Ferri, a Roman painter active in the Baroque period. Born in Rome, he attended Peter da Cortona’s workshop. He began a series of works with him, first in Rome at the Quirinale Palace and then in Florence at the Palazzo Pitti.
In this painting depicting the Martyrdom of St. Lawrence there are stylistic characteristics of cortonismo, a baroque current which takes its name from Pietro da Cortona. The scene is framed in an open space occupied by not only human figures but also by the architectural structure around them, giving an effect of continuity. The use of angelic figures on the upper right, the dynamic movement of the soldiers around San Lorenzo, the twist of the human body which is about to hit the martyr with a stick, are all typical elements of his exquisitely baroque production.
