Description

ILARIO SPOLVERINI
(Parma 1657 – Piacenza 1734)

Couple of Battles
Oil on canvas, 72 x 107 cm
This pair of battles is attributed to Ilario Spolverini, a Francesco Monti’s pupil. He made a trip to Florence, where he learned the style of Courtois and Reschi, and to Venice, enriching the color range of his palette.
There are not many data relating to his biography cause to his wandering life due to his desire of learning new techniques and obtaining commissions.

The two canvases depict battles setting in an open space. The harmonious colors of the figures and the landscape is reminiscent of the Venetian palette getting by the painter after a trip in the lagoon city.
The fight scenes placed in the foreground - framed by an architectural structure - and the fortified city in the distance, are elements deriving from Brescianino’s paintings that surely had a strong influence on his education.
