Description

GIUSEPPE CADES (school of)

Allegory
Last decade of the eighteenth century
Oil on canvas, 73.2 x 62.5 cm
It is a representation of Italy, unusually masculine surrounding a crowned noblewoman in an embrace. The Phrygian cap, a symbol of the Doges, probably alludes to Venice, of which the female figure would be the personification.
Characteristic of the style of this work is the new tendency to classicism revolves around Giuseppe Cades’ school, to its ability to assimilate and disseminate foreign ways, from Guercino to Veronese.
In the decade 1780-90, Cades became one of the best known and appreciated characters of the Roman artistic world and this canvas reflects the full flavor of this period.
