Rare first state out of two, before Francesco Villamena's
retouches.

Originally classified as an anonymous print by the School of Marcantonio Raimondi, the work was attributed by Bartsch to Philippe Soye, a pupil of Cornelis Cort. On the other hand, Massari considers it closer to the style of Giulio Bonasone._x000D_ Dumesnil, vol IX, p.136 / 137, n.2; Bartsch.XV.5; Massari 'Raphael Invenit, no. 14.

Rare proof on paper with the watermark 'Shield with letter M and star', Briquet n. 8392, Ferrara 1580. Perfect condition of the sheet, with thin margins beyond the platemark.
