Description

"Saint Therese of Avila". A carved ivory figure - Flemish sculptor follower of Claude Beissonat, late 17th Century; ; on a gilded wood base. Santa Teresa is depicted here in a moment of contained ecstasy, unusual iconography, different than the canonical version interpreted by Bernini and prevailing throughout the seventeenth century.
Active in Naples, the sculptor knew the version sculpted by Claude Beissonat in 1680 (Florence, Palazzo Pitti, Museo degli Argenti) and this statue represents a variant. 25.5 cm, 10 3/64 in high overall, weight 491 gr. Item condition grading: **** good (aureole missing, defects on the wooden base). Ce.S.Ar. Certificate of Antiquity
