Description

Relief with scene from the October Horse
Early 2nd century AD; alt. cm 12 ; A relief with a putto riding a horse towards the right; opposite is a second putto with a small sickle in his hand.
Restored. The scene is probably taken from the festival of the October Horse, an animal sacrifice to Mars carried out on the 15th October, which coincides with the end of the agricultural and military campaigning season.

PROVENANCE:
Private collection, London; acquired on the European art market in the 1990s.
