Sicily, Syracuse, Hieron II (275-215), 32 Litrai (Octadrachm), c. 218-215 BC; AR (g 28,27; mm 32; h 12); Diademed head l.; on r., pileus or modius, Rv. Nike driving fast quadriga r., holding reins and kentron; below, E; above, BAΣIΛEOΣ; in ex. IEPΩNOΣ. CCO, pl. I, D3/R1 (same dies).
Of the highest rarity, and one of the best specimens known. Undoubtedly one of the most important and desirable Greek coins, a masterpiece of the Ellenistic style. Attractive cabinet tone, surface somewhat porous, anyway extremely fine.
