Description

ALIGHIERO BOETTI (Torino 1940 - Roma 1994)
Calendar, 1989

Calendar paper collage on paper, 25 x 35 cm;

According to Aligiero Boetti, time is a power that works in all directions and the thought of a certain day in the future sets its energy in motion. "Dates? Do you know why they are very important? Because if you write '1970' on a wall, for example, it looks like nothing, but in thirty years' time... Every day that passes, this date becomes more beautiful, it is time that is working. Dates have this beauty, the more time passes, the more beautiful they become" (interview with Mirella Bandini, 1972, in Boetti-catalogue 1965-1994, Mazzotta 1996, p. 200). The artwork included here is part of the 'calendars' series: pieces that were created using the collage technique. By assembling the pages of old calendars from different years, the artist aimed to re-contextualise the meaning of the date numbers. In these works, geometry and mathematics self-organise in compositions that recall works such as the Annual Clock: a series of clocks that mark the years instead of the time.
