German ivory carving depicting Saint Christopher - 18th Century


walrus ivory carving (Odobenus rosmarus Linnaeus, 1758) depicting Saint Christopher, described in legend as carrying the infant Christ across a river and thus becoming the patron saint of travellers. This compact sculpture of the saint was undoubtedly intended for a traveller to continue a journey, avoiding dangers along the open road. Height x width x depth 11.7 x 4.8 x 2.8 cm. Weight 43.9 gr. Item condition grading: **** good (minor losses; some surface wear commensurate with age & use). Accompanied by Ce.S.Ar. Centro Studi Archeometrici certificate of authenticity (pre-1947).
