Description

GARIBALDI, Giuseppe (Nizza, 4 luglio 1807 - Caprera, 2 giugno 1882)
allegorical picture titled THE NEW ITALY

Oil on canvas, allegory of the Risorgimento, made in the period 1861-1866. It represents King Vittorio Emanuele II holding two black embroidered veils to cover two women, representing respectively VENICE under the veil on his right, and ROME under the veil on his left. Note the lion of San Marco next to Donna Venezia, and the Capitoline she-wolf next to Donna Roma. Behind them we have Giuseppe Garibaldi who shows with satisfaction the tricolor of Italian national unity, to which he had contributed with the enterprise of the Thousand of Marsala for the annexation of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. To the right of the King we find Italia Turrita, depicted as a woman standing on steps, and next to her Donna Francia holding the scepter with an imperial eagle. Beautiful allegory, in style, of the period immediately following the enterprise of the Thousand in 1860, and before 1866, the year of annexation of the republic of Venice (Rome will be Italian in 1870), which took place with the help of France which fought against the Austrians . The canvas mounted on a coeval frame, has several tears, needs a good wash, but overall in good condition.
