Description

Sicily, Litra, Katane, c. 461-413 BC; AR (g 0,80; mm 11; h 6); Head of Silenos l., wearing ivy wreath; at r., Π, dotted border, Rv. KATANAIΩN, winged thunderbolt; at sides, two shields. Boehringer, Kataneische Li 6; Mirone 82; SNG Copenhagen 182; SNG ANS -.
Very rare, old cabinet tone, high conservation for the typology, extremely fine.

The coin is signed Π, for the artist Prokles, whose full signature is known on tetradrachms at Katane in this period.
This Prokles is thought to be the same artist who engraved a number of magnificent didrachm, hemidrachm, and litra dies at Naxos and maybe these works suggest that he lived in Naxos.
