Description

Dinast of Dacia, Koson, Stater,Olbia, mid 1st century - 29 BC; AV (g 8,39; mm 20; h 12); Procession of three men in Roman togas l., the foremost and hindmost carrying fasces lictoriae over shoulder; in ex. KOΣΩN, Rv. Eagle standing l., on sceptre, holding wreath in one claw. RPC 1701 B; BMC Thrace 2.
Good extremely fine.

Although the identity of the Koson named on the coins remains uncertain, the Coinage in his name must be the coinage of L. Brutus described by Appian. On obverse, there is the consul L. Junius Brutus, who expelled the Tarquins from Rome in 509 BC, accompanied by two lictors. The reverse, an eagle with wreath, was evidently a standard type at Rome. The designs express Brutus' propaganda in civil war.
