Description

A WHITE GLAZED AND COPPER RED DECORATED PORCELAIN SPOUTED BOWL
Korea, Joseon dynasty, 19th century

Circular section, on a side of the mouth a long curved spout, the external surface decorated with a red chrysanthemum branch.

5 x 16 cm

Provenance: ambassador Francesco Rausi.

The copper red decoration is one of the most complex to manage in firing. The korean potters experimented it with success already in the Goryeo period often in combination with the céladon glaze, and in the Joseon era on white porcelain.
This container is therefore rare not only for its particular shape but also for the brilliance and fluidity with which the copper red has been preserved.
