Description

Two carinated bowls, short wall, disc-shaped foot A- ORVIETO, 14th Century; B- ROME, 14th – 15th Century.Archaic majolica painted in green and manganese duotone. Interior: A-Brettoni (later Gatti) coat-of-arms in a trellis; B- unidentified heraldic shield. Exterior: A- green chain band; B- two manganese lines. A- Ø 11.5 cm.; h. 4.5 cm.. Cond.: good; glueing and minimal restoration. B- Ø 12 cm.; h. 6.5 cm. Cond.: glueing, small part of rim missing.Finger-bowls for the table of a prosperous family. Inside bowl A we see the coat-of-arms of the Brettoni family, illustrious members of Viterbo society at that time. The coat-of-arms painted inside bowl B has not yet been identified, but the style of the decoration points to a Roman family.
