TURIN, Francesco Gnagni, called Francesco Durantino; 1575–1578.
White majolica in compendiario style with identical polychrome emblems depicted on both sides, two drilled sides and winged White majolica in compendiario style with identical polychrome emblems depicted on both sides, two drilled sides and winged Caryatids placed at the four vertices.
H. cm. 11,5; Ø cm.11,5.Condition: good; some chips in the protruding areas
Inscription within the cartouche: Questa / antichità / via Camerana 8 / Torino.
Provenance: Turin, Questa’s collectionThe saltwater shows an emblem depicting a lion flanked by letters G and V on one of the four sides, which is the one of the ancient family of Guiscardi from Turin. The white compendiario style may conduct to a production in Faenza or Urbino, but it could even be a proof of the activity of Orazio Fontana in Turin – called by Emanuele Filiberto of Savoia to establish a factory of excellence – or it should be a rare artifact by Francesco Gnagni (or Nanni), operating in town approximately in 1578/79.
Therefore, the magnificent saltwater could be an important high artistic level proof in the city of Turin in the 1500s.
