A WHITE AND BROWN SLIP INLAID AND CÉLADON GLAZED CERAMIC VASE, MAEBYONG

Korea, Goryeo period style

The vase with a circular section with maximum diameter width near the shoulder which supports a short cylindrical neck with the mouth underlined by a border, the inlaid decoration of white and brown slip on the céladon glaze consisting of cranes flying amidst clouds, some inside circular medallions.

33 x 18 cm

Provenance: Italian private collection, acquired in Korea in the 1960s.

A similar vase is the Kansong Art Museum in Seoul (see The Radiance of Jade and the Clarity of Water. Korean Ceramics from the Ataka Collection, exhibition catalogue (Chicago-San Francisco New York), New York 1991, p. 32, fig. 10).
