Gaius, called Caligula (37-41), Sestertius, Rome, AD 37-38; AE (g 27,39; mm 35; h 6); C CAESAR AVG GERMANICVS P M TR POT, Pietas veiled seated l., holding patera and resting elbow on figure of Spes; in ex. PIETAS, Rv. DIVO - AVG, Caligula, togate and veiled, standing l. in front of hexastyle temple surmounted by quadriga. He sacrifices out of patera over garlanded altar; on l., attendant leads bull to altar; on r., a second attendant holds patera; in field, S - C. RIC 36; C 9.
Exceptionally detailed obverse, green patina, extremely fine.
