Description

Post-Classical onyx cameo of two clasped hands, 7 x 11 mm. This very attractive subject, the clasped hands – dextrarum junctio, is of great importance in the visual history. Giving “fede” rings as love tokens is an Ancient habit, though it seems to be the Romans who first gave an annulus pronobus. This gem copies in a gifted manner the Roman cameos that are usually white on blue, and of much cruder carving.
