Description

Interesting carnelian intaglio. Diana and Cupid. The scene, set in the nature, seems partly inspired by some pictorial prototypes which were fashionable during the 17th and 18th century. Cupid, holding an arrow in his hand, is portraied while stretching his arm upwards, wishing to catch the bow that the goddess, sitting upon a trunk, is lifting much and much higher. The intaglio is characterized by a deep excavation to obtain the volumes and by particular emphasis on the character's anatomy. Slightly worn surface, chippings on the edge. Unusual circular shape. 17th-18th century. ; 20,5x20,5x4 mm;
