Description

Islamic, Arab-Byzantine, Anonymous Issue, Solidus, Spain, ca. AD 711-714 (AH 92, Indiction IX); EL (g 3,75; mm 12); Abbreviated Latin legend around a seven-pointed star, Rv. H SLD FRT INSP A[NNXCII]; in field, INDC IX. Bernardi -; Walker -; A. 122 for type; cfr. Spink Auction 6th-7th December 2017, lot 601.
Of the highest rarity, the second known of this early date, good very fine.

The date of coin would equate to AD 711 and make this the earliest known Spanish Umayyad coin, struck in the first year of Muslim influence, soon after Musa Ibn Nusayr arrived in al-Andalus. Unlike many later examples, it is a carefully made coin that may have been struck by the travelling mint accompanying Musa Ibn Nusayr himself. So far unpublished and unrecorded; as the first Islamic coin in Andalusian history this is an important addition to both Spanish and Islamic numismatics.
