Description

Fragment of Tournai stone
Tournai or Arras, late 14th century

height cm 57,5 (22,6’’); width cm 29 (11,4’’); depth cm 8 (3’’)
Fragment of Tournai stone from a Northern France tomb slab.
Surviving fragments with similar script and architectural details help to draw the dating of the tomb to the late 14th century. The polished blue-black carboniferous limestone, the fragment made up of rectangular slabs, the white pigment, the irregular size of the slabs and their horizontal edges cut at a later period, indicate that the tomb was later carved up and re-used in a different context, likely as paving stones.
Inscription: II desaulme prie(z) – ‘on whose soul have pity’.

English Collection.
