Description

A roman banded agate intaglio. Scorpion. The animal is characterized by a large body, with long tail and frontal legs with globular elements. Subject quite appreciated in roman glittic, the scorpion had an astrological and magical meaning, presented in various gnostic amulets againts bites and venenous insects. Cfr.: U. Pannuti, Catalogo della collezone glittica, vol I, p.160; A. Mastrocinque, Sylloge gemmarum gnosticarum, p. 385. For this intaglio, rare choice of variegated banded agate with microinclusions, well realised. Wear marks and little chips on the edges. Mirror polishing of the incised part. 1st-2nd century A.D.
