Description

A HARDSTONES-INLAID GILT METAL AND WOOD BOOK COVER
Tibet 14th-15th (?) century

22,5 x 52,3 cm

Rectangular shape, the outer frame decorated in relief with a lively phytomorphic arabesque enclosed within two small frames adorned with a string of cabochon semi-precious stones, the interior scene consisting of a divinity in the center, to its left a kneeling figure holding a tray, on the right a horse, the scene delimited by two very elegant birds whose feathers stretch in a whirling spiral.

Provenance: Italian private collection.

The main scene of this very fine book cover describes a famous moment in the life of Sakyamuni, the original Buddha: his decision to abandon the worldly life to devote himself to meditation. One night he escaped from his royal palace on the back of his favorite horse, then cut his hair asking his servant Khanda to collect them together with the jewels to bring them back to his father.
