Description

AN INK AND COLOURS WALL PAPER PANEL
China, Qing dynasty, mid 18th century

290 x 122 cm

The scene - set in a village with trees, rocks and pavillions - describes an audience, with a dignitary at the center towards which all the other characters seem to be heading, the paper glued on old canvas, wood frame.

Provenance: Italian private collection.

This panel - and the two at the following lots - is an example of a type of painted paper made in China explicitly for the European market. During the 18th century, in fact, it was very popular to completely cover the walls of some rooms of the aristocratic residences with this kind of wallpaper, a fashion that has left numerous and splendid traces of itself also in Italy, in particular in Piedmont, Florence and Rome.
