Description

A roman red jasper intaglio. Gryllos.
8 x 11 x 2 mm
The creature is composed by a Silene mask joined with a goat's head (eating ears of corn), on top an horse protome (a bay leaf crown in the mouth); the hybrid has a cock leg. A palm branch (victory), a cornucopia (abundance), the letter K. Ground line. Interesting auspicious and apotropaic representation.
2nd-3rd century AD.
