Description

A roman heliotrope (bloodstone) intaglio. Venus.
8 x 15 x 3 mm
The goddess is standing and seen from the front, with a nude torso and legs covered by a drapery. The figure holds the right hand on the breast, while the left hand holds the drapery on the groin. Subject inspired by hellenistic models. Interesting work. Attractive variety of stone referable to the production of protective magic amulets. Slight wear marks.
2nd-3rd century AD.
