Description

A late Roman-Byzantine red jasper intaglio. Christological emblem.
5 x 7 x 2 mm
The composition is structured in the manner of cruciform monograms, later used by the Byzantines. The emblem seems to be formed by two crossed keys at the ends of which are a Christogram, a crescent moon and letters (to be identified). Slight signs of wear. Rare. For comparisons: British Museum Collection Database.
4th - 6th century AD.
