Description

Two Bowls

Two bowls with flat brim, wall with fairing, disc-shaped base with stacco a cordicella.
Archaic majolica painted with brown signs in the rim, white inside and cavetti with phytomorphic decoration in green-brown two-tone between the trellises. On the outside there is a very particular two-colour decoration.
1-2: Ø cm. 8; h. cm. 4..Cond.:very good; minor flaws from firing and declining enamel.

Umbrian - Latium area, 14th century.

The small bowls were used as finger bowls for the diners, as it appears in Giotto's fresco "Death of the Knight of Celano" (1292-1305), in the Upper Basilica of Assisi.
