Description

Vase with lid

Large, bell-shaped, very tapered parade vase, slightly convex at the bottom under the fairing; after the ring, high instep, with flared support. Dome lid with knob grip.
Majolica painted in polychromy all-round, in the lid graceful cherubs play among baroque foliage; in the body of the country scene of great effect: women bathe in the stream before returning home with the family, with the two horses, one white and one dark, who bring the laundry just washed. The scene has several consequential passages, to form a "story" of the peasant world in the eighteenth century. In the instep are carefully painted baroque fantasy motifs. For the richness of the images, for their freshness of design, for the rich but delicate shade of colour, and finally for the complexity of the figuration, the vases in question is attributed to Carlo Antonio Grue, at the beginning of the 18th century.
H. cm. 42.5; Øb. cm. 27.5; h. with lid cm. 59. Cond: glue.
Castles, Carlo Antonio Grue, early 18th century.
