Description

TWO PAINTED CERAMIC FUNERARY MODELS OF HORSES AND RAIDERS
China, Han dynasty

Both sculptures depicting a standing horse on the back of which sits a knight, the details of both figures painted in red, black and white.

31 cm the highest

Provenance: Fabrizio Savi collection, acquired from Galerie Moderne, Bruxelles, between 1995 and 2000.
The minuteness with which each of these ceramic sculptures (mingqi) were painted, in the rendering of the details, was not a mere exercise. Every single statue ideally portrayed a single soldier, who therefore showed specific physiognomic features.

* The thermoluminescence carried out on the smaller of the two pieces on 17/2/2000 from the Brussels Art Laboratory. Nuclear Section. Institut Superieur Industriel de Bruxelles confirms the proposed dating.
