Description

A GILT AND LACQUERED BRONZE BODHISATTVA
China, Qing dynasty, 18th-19th century

The deity sitting on a basement simulating a rock on a spur of which the small figure of a devotee, the legs - between which a small quadruped is crouched - in the lalitasana position, the right arm resting on the knee of the corresponding leg, the left hand on the thigh of the left leg, the wide robe showing the nude chest adorned with jewels, on the arms stems of lotus flowers, the crown on the head with a small Buddha in the center.

27,3 cm high

Provenance: Fabrizio Savi collection, acquired in the early 2000s.
The presence of the small animal on the base suggests that the bodhisattva depicted here could be identyfied with Manjushri (in Chinese Wenshu), a deity who embodies knowledge and wisdom, in some aspects of his iconography depicted together with a Buddhist lion.
