A PAIR OF IVORY CARVINGS OF GROUPS OF BUDDHIST DEITIES
China, early 20th century
The two sculptures have the same composition. On the shaped base a Buddhist lion, on the back of which a bodhisattva sitting on a lotus flower-shaped base, on the two sides two standing deities, on the front of the base another figure of divinity, the external walls of the base adorned with good omen characters in relief, all the figures adorned with the inlay of small stones and coloured glasses, the two bodhisattva with a small Buddha in the center of the crown and a flaming nimbus behind their backs.
