Description

A PAINTED STUCCO MALE HEAD
Ancient region of Gandhara, 4th-5th century

The head depicting a young man - evidently of Mediterranean origins - with prominent cheekbones, the aquiline nose, large eyes and fleshy lips, the hair moves with natural course, originally painted in blue of which traces remain evident.

26 cm high

Provenance: Italian private collection.
In the evolution of Gandhara art, the use of stucco chronologically follows the use of stone, and its beginnings date back generally to the 4th century. Less expensive and easier to work, the stucco allowed the artist to realize a greater profusion of anatomical details, often enlivened by the use of color. The use of this more malleable plastic material also meant the decisive recovery of Hellenistic and Roman stylistic elements, more naturalistic than the more rigid canons in vogue during the previous Kusana period.
