A TERRACOTTA CIRCULAR TILE WITH VIDHYADARA
North-eastern India, Gupta dynasty, 3rd-6th century


Circular shape, the architectural element with a figure in great relief, the legs bent in a dynamic position and wrapped in a fabric fastened at the waist, naked torso and outstretched arms, around the neck a necklace with a diadem, the head in a slight twist to the left , long hair with curls.

Provenance: Italian private collection.
Vidhyadara are supernatural beings, connected with Hinduism and in particular with Shiva, described in the sacred texts of the doctrine as spirits of the air that assist various deities. They are given different powers, including the ability to reduce their size. Mention of these semi-gods is also found in Buddhism and Jainism.
