Made with a barrel of recycled oil, this sculpture belongs to the series of works entitled ""Waste Land - planet devastated"" by greed and wealth. The ""Total Chanel"" sculpture presents the two faces of consumerism; on the front we see a beautiful bottle of perfume cleverly replicated by the artist, but only when the sculpture is turned we note that on the back there is the logo of the oil company Total.
The combination of the Chanel and Total brands is not accidental. By combining the oil multinational with the international perfume icon, the artist places a critical emphasis on the environmental impact caused by consumerism: while the identity of the Chanel brand is based on chic design, luxury and exclusivity, the oil multinational Total is compromised by allegations of damage to the environment from oil spills or chemical plant explosions. The implication is clear: the price of our life choices is supported by the natural resources of the earth. With the Waste Land series, the artist condemns the modern lifestyle and the devastation of the planet by man, abandoning the playful tone evident in many of his works."
